Tips for Trimming Airport Parking Costs

Some travelers are paying more to park their car at the airport than to fly to their destination, prompting Travelers Advantage to issue these tips for trimming the cost of airport parking this holiday season.
"Parking your car at the airport can cost more than the flight to your destination," Travelers Advantage Last-Minute Travel Expert Julia Ryan said. "Parking at a New York area airport can range from $10 to $24 a day, adding $140 to $336 to the cost of your trip. Some parking facilities also collect taxes or other fees.

"Many travelers drive their own car to the airport to reduce the hassle," she added. "Travelers can cut this expense and make sure they avoid parking problems by following these five simple steps."

* Using an off-airport parking area can save money -- but be sure they
will be open when you need to arrive, provide free airport pickup and
are open when you will return. If you are returning at night or live in
an area where snow falls, look for a company that will start you car
and have it free from snow when you step off the shuttle bus at their
lot.

* Make a reservation to lock in a rate and -- especially during peak
travel seasons -- be sure you have a place to park. During holiday
travel, without a reservation you could end up stuck on the ground
while your flight takes off.

* Choose a service that offers interior parking if you want an extra
measure of protection for your vehicle.

* Consider taking a van, shuttle, bus or limo to the airport. Some
services will pick you up and drop you off at your door while others
run from hotels or terminals. A few airports in the U.S. are accessible
by public transportation (train, bus or subway).
